Today, there was a question posted on my Discord server about Zustand vs. Jotai. It's often a controversial topic in the React state management world. Some people say both are developed by the same person. It's me. I would usually avoid getting involved in such discussions, because there are no definitive answers. Both are great.

When someone asked about my preference, I said I would choose Jotai, and here's why. Zustand essentially creates a global state, whereas Jotai atoms are more like functions. Personally, I feel uncomfortable using global variables. A global store is, in a way, a global variable. Atoms, on the other hand, are functions, and we typically define functions globally. Technically, a Jotai store without context is also a global store. But since atoms are functions, I feel better writing them, even though the Jotai store is technically global.

It's worth noting that Zustand store can be defined contextually, so it's not always global. What really matters to me is the coding mental model. This is the main reason I’d choose Jotai over Zustand for my app development. But, I will continue to maintain both libraries regardless.

By the way, have you heard of the third state management library of mine called Valtio? It's also quite popular among users.
